iPod nano 7th Generation and Apple Music

We want to sync an iPod nano 7th Generation with tracks from Apple Music that have been downloaded to the laptop in iTunes.

We get a warning message saying:

".... was not copied to the iPod because Apple Music songs cannot be copied to an iPod.

To play Apple Music songs on your iPod, turn on iCloud Music Library on your iPod."

But I don't think it's possible to turn on iCloud Music on the iPod nano because it has no wifi connectivity? The only way to add music is by syncing with another device. But Apple Music is flagged as not being copyable...

So we have a brand new iPod that can't connect with Apple Music? Not very connected - or am I missing something?

Perhaps better to exchange iPod nano for iPod touch?

Apple Music cannot be used on the iPod Nano or Shuffle because they don't have the internet connection necessary to authenticate the songs. The device has to be able to block the songs if you terminate your subscription. You can use Apple Music with the iPod Touch or other iOS devices (provided they are running the latest iOS).

Ah, I see the reason, thanks Roger

Rather rules out using the nano if you subscribe to Apple Music though - galling to pay twice.

Hopefully Apple can find a work around. Presumably the songs could be removed at the next sync - and they could include a minimum sync time after which you lose songs from Apple Music... etc

All feels a bit lazy to me and we are left with an unsatisfactory solution for the consumer... Shame.

I would be very surprised if there's ever a "workaround" for this. From day 1 its been clearly stated that Apple Music works only with internet-connected iOS devices - even if it was both technically feasible and economically viable to update the firmware/OS on non-iOS iDevices, I very much doubt that Apple's contractual agreements with content producers allow for offline verification of media rights.
