Q: How do we save to pdf a photos book with double spread page?

in mac with OS X yosemite, using latest Photos.

Step 1- Creating a book with double spread page/ image.

double spread image.jpg

Step 2- Save as pdf.

Result - 2 pages are saved into one page. The picture is squeezed in. It reduces the number of pages of the book and changes the book order.

Any way to over come this problem? I can't send the book for printing service because of this.

Thanks

Barak

If you look at the saved PDF file in Preview and select one of the spread pages, you will see that the PDF file is correct.  Click command-I to open the Info panel. The page size of the spread page is larger than the page size of the regular pages.

But ask the print service, if they can print this format.  For example, the page size of a spread page as shown in Preview:

    Screen Shot 2015-12-25 at 18.19.44GMT.png

Otherwise use the work-around to split add your panoramic shot twice to book - cut out the left part and add it to a left page and cut out the right part and add it to the adjacent right page.

    Hi

Many thanks for the help, It doesn't solve the problem yet.

The writing service doesn't know how to split it to two pages automatically.

The workaround doesn't hales because we loose the proportion of the picture and we can't add the full picture in this way.

This capability was in photos before I upgraded to Yosemite, It feels like a Yosemite specific bug. Is there another workaround?

Does anyone know if apple will fix the bug or I have to re-do the book from scratch? This will be a pity, I invested a lot of work in it.

Double spread is one of the supported editing layouts of the program, if it doesn't work, apple should block it or provide a warning message.

    Thanks

I doubt Apple will do anything about it, because the saved PDF is exactly the format that is sent to Apple's Print Services and the correct format for having the book printed by Apple, including double spreads.

But send a feature request to Apple using the feedback form and ask for a inclusion of the old PDF layout.   iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture

The work-around I described is what I used in iPhoto before the spread pages were available and it worked well, but it required a precise cropping of the two parts of the photo.

You might try using PrestoPhotos online printing service.  They advertise that they can print bound books, calendars, etc. from the PDF file from iPhoto and/or Photos.

Since Apple's printers are setup to use that type of pdf file that's the only kind of pdf file that is created by Photos.

its it's not a new feature it a bug.

it worked well with iPhoto before Yosemite and Photos.

its a regression. Where can we feed bugs to photos?

    is there a workaround?

You can still us iPhoto if you have iPhoto 9.6.1.  iPhoto wasn't deleted from your hard drive.  It was just removed from the Dock and is still in the Applications folder. In order to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store you first must have some version of iPhoto 9.X on your hard drive. If you do try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.

Use the feedback form:  Apple - Photos - Feedback

Or if you want to file an elaborate bug report use the developer bug reporter:   Detailed and Effective Bug Reporting | Apple Support Communities

As I described above. Previously, before Apple allowed spread pages in photo books, I duplicated my panoramic photos twice and cropped the two copies. One cropped part contained the left half of the photo and the other cropped part the right part of the photo. I added them to two neighboring full page pages. It is a lot of work, but worked very well.
