Your screen sounds like it is not working correctly, and that it is having a Hardware problem. If your original Warranty or its extension under AppleCare is still valid, Apple will replace any screen determined to have a defect in materials or workmanship.
If your warranty has expired, they can replace it for you for a fixed price, no surprises.
Certain 2011 through 2013 15-in MacBook Pros are subject to a possible recall, and if ALL conditions are met, these can be repaired at no cost to you regardless of warranty.
A screen that is damaged implies that it has suffered trauma. Damage from rough handling, especially if the glass breaks, is not covered under warranty.
