I bought an iPhone 5 off of Craigslist in the US and was using it with my T-Mobile sim. Then I came to India and if I try to put a local sim, it says Activation Required and my SIM is not valid. I contacted T-Mobile but then they said that they haven't locked the phone and the same reply by AT&T. What do I do?

It sounds like you are getting a message saying SIM Invalid when you have your AT&T SIM card in it. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you out here:
If you get an alert about the SIM card in your iPhone
- Make sure that you have an active plan with your carrier.
- Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
- Turn airplane mode on and then off again.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Go to Settings > General > About and check for a carrier settings update.
- Remove your SIM card from the SIM card tray and then put the SIM card back. Make sure that the SIM tray closes completely and isn’t loose. If you use a SIM tray from a different model iPhone or from another phone manufacturer, it might not fit properly.
- Try using another SIM card. If you don't have one, go to your carrier's retail store and ask them to test with another SIM card. You might need to replace your SIM card.
