How to update GMAIL Password on MAIL

Out of Security measures, i recently updated and changed my gmail password. On my mac mail where my gmail is set to receive new mail has stopped on the right top corner it says "login failed". Because the password has changed i hope but there is no way to update your password without deleting the account and adding a new internet account. if i do that then won't all my EMAILS re download again. Please Help

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

To change password in El Capitan Mail 9.2, you could do it by in a bit odd way:

Mail / Preferences / Accounts / Account Information / Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) / Edit SMTP Server List / (chose account you want to update), at the bottom of the window:

User Name: ...

Password: ...

This is workable work around for me. Hope it help! 🙂

The problem appears to be with Google's 2-step verification, which I turned on this morning after receiving a phishing email from a trusted source. I also changed my password. I turned 2-step verification off, and Mail immediately connected to Gmail.

This did not work for me. I have updated the password as you outline above, but I am still not able to access Gmail. I'm still looking for a solution.

This worked for me. I did not have Google's 2-step verification on.

I agree that's an extremely odd way to do something as simple as update a password for an email account.
