Dec 26, 2015 10:48 AM in response to herbiefitzby Old Toad,Where are you importing them to and with what application?
If you using the new Photos app select the checkbox in the Import window as shown in this screenshot:
If you're still using iPhoto then it's you don't tell it to delete from the iPhone until you start the import process. This window will pop up so you can select whether or not to delete from the iPhone:
Lastly if you're using Image Capture to import your photos the checkbox will be in the bottom left hand corner of the window:

Dec 28, 2015 8:49 AM in response to herbiefitzby herbiefitz,- Open Photos (if it isn’t already open), then click Import in the toolbar.
Note: The Import button only appears when a camera or storage device is connected.
Photos displays all the photos and videos on the device.
Tip: If you want Photos to open whenever you connect this device, click the Action button , then choose “Open Photos for this device.”
- If you want to delete photos from the camera after importing them, click the Action button , then choose “Delete items after import.”
- Do one of the following:
- Import all new photos: Click Import All New Photos.
- Import a selection of photos: Click the photos you want to import, then click Import
- Open Photos (if it isn’t already open), then click Import in the toolbar.

Jan 18, 2016 8:03 AM in response to LarryHNby GeoATX,Thanks for the quick reply LarryHN - I have restarted my phone (with Photos open & phone connected) and nothing changed. I closed and reopened Photos (with phone on and connected) and nothing changed either... I am using Photos 1.3 w el Capitan 10.11.2. I just saw in another post that if you have converted your old iPhotos / Photostream to Photos you loose the option to delete from your phone upon import, but I did not select that option when I upgraded, so-o-o-o, I'm still in the dark...

The "Deelete items after import" will not be available, if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone or iPad. It depends on the Settings on your iPhone. If your iPhone is using iCloud Photo Library, you can no longer delete from the iPhone when importing. You have to delete the photos from iCloud Photo Library.

Sep 28, 2016 5:24 PM in response to GeoATXby Sebastian Kuhn,I have the same problem, but apparently only after updating to iOS10.0.2. The check-box with "delete photos after import" disappeared. Fortunately, your trick worked for me - rebooting the iPhone with Photos open and the phone attached. The box is back and works! I'm not sure whether I should be more upset about Apple making it so bizarrely difficult to enable this feature, or about the fact that a company sitting on billions in cash "cannot afford" to hire a programmer that would at least update the Help file (which is still babbling about an "action button" that is nowhere to be seen).

Photos for MacWhile we're at it, why is it so bizarrely inconsistent how to delete photos that are already imported in Photos? Depending on the view (thumbnail vs. edit vs. large scale), the "delete" button either works or doesn't. How about a consistent interface experience???

I'm always using command-delete. It will delete a photo everywhere in Photos.
"delete" doubles for "Remove from album". Apple gave priority to removing photos from albums, rather than deleting them - perhaps to make it harder to accidentally delete photos.

Photos for MacUnfortunately, it seems that this trick (rebooting the phone while it's connected to the Mac, with Photo running) now has to be repeated every single time! My next attempt to transfer new photos shot on the iPhone ended with Photo first proclaiming "No Photos" although it auto-started as soon as I connected. Clicking on something else and then the iPhone icon again in Photos yielded the truly puzzling message that the iPhone wasn't trusted! (I've been using these 2 together for 1+ years now, with nary a hiccup before). Entering the security code on the phone revealed the photos I tried to import - but once again the button for deleting after import disappeared. And off I went, doing the whole song and dance (reboot iPhone...) again - finally with success. This is clearly a bug in either the newest iOS or whatever latest "safety upgrade" for my MacOS was foisted on me. Hopefully Apple will fix it in Sierra.
