Safari/SSL Problem with SiteGround

I'm having a bit of a tiff with SiteGround tech support. I believe there is a problem with their server setup, and they believe it is a problem with Safari. (I think it's a little of both.) Since they can't reproduce the problem, I'm having a hard time convincing them to take action (they sent me here).

If you could take a few minutes to perform a test and enter your results, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  1. Using Safari, go to https://goatdata.com/timeouttest.php
  2. Wait for around 2 minutes and click on "CLICK HERE" which reloads the page.
  3. On problem machines, Safari waits indefinitely to load the page on the 2nd click. It never throws an error or times out -- it just sits there, loading forever. If this happens to you, you many need to stop loading before you can enter your results.
  4. Enter your results.

So far, I have only found this issue with Safari running on El Capitan, but I only have a limited number of Macs available to me for testing. When Safari hangs, the server does not record the request, so it seems to be a communication problem on a lower layer (SSL?). It is also time-dependent like it is TTL (Time To Live) related, with the problem starting at around 90 seconds of idle time.

If anyone has come across something similar, I'd love to hear from you. And if anyone knows of a fix, that would be even better.

This problem only happens with Safari, and it looks like it might be only 9.0.2 on El Capitan. It would be nice if people could perform the test mentioned in my first post -- post results here if you like -- so I can get an idea of what version(s) are affected. You can check any of these URLs as well:

1. Load the page.

2. Wait for 2 minutes.

3. Press the Reload button.

Surely there is something wrong with Safari as well, since it will remain in a state of "loading" indefinitely without timing out or throwing an error.

Just writing here to say GoatData isn't the only person having these issues with Siteground / Safari / SSL. I can confirm from my own findings that Sitegrounds cloud hosting works fine with Safari and SSL, but shared hosting is the problem (and possibly dedicated hosting)?

They say they can't recreate the issue, which is frustrating, because I now know that many people can. Siteground's advanced tech support is not in the United States, so that could also be part of the issue of why they can't recreate it?

Is this something Apple/Safari should be fixing?

Key Players

  • Safari 9.0 - 9.0.2
  • OS X El Capitan (Yosemite seems fine)
  • Siteground Shared Hosting
  • Site ground's Standard SSL (haven't tested their more expensive SSLs)

GoatData put together a nice test at the URL posted above: https://goatdata.com/timeouttest.php
