Q: Vertex 3 SSD not showing up in SATA port. Early 2011 MBP

Loaded a bootable copy of El Capitan onto it, drive shows up in recovery mode but after a few seconds of loading I get a Prohibitory symbol. OS runs fine through USB. I'm willing to purchase a new SATA cable and have been reading for a few days now and see mostly problems with the SATA cable. But, if I do get the same cable meant for my MBP, why would that one work over the one I have now? Really just looking for a cable to support 6Gb/s (it says under System info I support up to 6 Gb/s in both ports) Also, any info on Optical drive hubs would be greatly appreciated. I removed mine about an hour ago and the SATA connection was different than I expected. Just trying to get full SATA 3 on both. Thanks for your time.

TL;DR

SATA Cable won't support 6 Gb/s, keep getting Prohibitory symbol at boot, which replacement cable would I need to make it work.

I don't know why you have a problem. I use several of them and have never experienced any problem. Are you sure you prepped the SSD properly - partitioning and formatting for OS X. Are you using an OS X version known to boot your 2011 MBP? The optical drive interface supports 3 Gb/s, not 6 Gb/s. You should run the SSD in the main HDD port if you want to boot from it. There it supports 6 Gb/s. The ribbon cable in the computer is sufficient.

I formatted to OSX Journaled and like I said, the OS boots fine from USB and is completely useable. I thought it was sufficient but I can't quite figure it out. I'm running El Capitan from my HDD and it runs just fine, but from the SSD I get the prohibitory screen about half way through the load bar when it's booting up. I have a 1tb Toshiba I was gonna pop in the Optic drive. I've reset NVRAM and done all the boot options I know. Would a 2012 SATA cable work for me? I wouldn't mind forgoing the LED if that's all that would be different.

    Prohibitory symbol

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

If you're using your Mac at a school or business, it might be trying to start from the wrong version of OS X. Contact your IT department for more help.

If this is your personal Mac, try reinstalling OS X by using OS X Recovery.

Given this is the problem you describe, I would examine the above for some insight into the problem.
