Q: Dreaded Macbook Pro Sleep Problem

I've had problems with my silver 15inch Macbook Pro (2009) for a while where it wouldn't awaken from sleep but had always managed to get it to come on after doing the usual SMC/PRAM etc etc. Now, however, it simply refuses to co-operate. It boots and I hear it running, hear the chimes etc. Caps Lock button lights but screen is black, shined torch into screen and nothing. Apple logo on lid does not light either. Keys illuminate when closing laptop. I've tried the usual tricks/key combinations to get it to run but none seem to work anymore. Cannot connect to an exterior monitor as I have none. Is this a dead Macbook? Would Apple examine it when the serial number has become so faint I can no longer see it and without it booting I can't get it from the diagnostics
