Since OS 10.5.8 has become passend time, syncing iPad iOS 8.1.3 with my MacBook Pro is no longer possible via iTunes. I do not want to upgrade my MacBook Pro in order to avoid having to buy other programmes anew. is there a way around?

Hi Walter, only workaround I can think of is Installing a newer OSX on an external drive & booting from that when you need to sync... less than ideal of course. 😟

I have an external disk permanently linked to my MacBook for automatic backup. Would that do the job? If yes, how to install a newer OSX on it and not on the MacBook? You see, I am quite ignorant of the wonders of modern technology...

What size is it & how much free space?
It's not the best idea to use a Backup Disk for this, but can be done.

I use a Packard Bell working in 'Time Machine' with 857,6 GB available from 931,2 GB. Would-be happy to try a possible procedure.

Well, turn off Time Machine temporarily, try installing 10.6.x on it.
