The latest version available to you depend on

a: the current version of iphoto that you have and

b: the version of the OS that you have.

iMac 5.1, OSX 10.6.8. Real hassle on identifying latest version of the iPhoto library, multiple storage of pics and uploading newer pics from MBP El C photos across to iPhoto 6.0.6.

You have the latest version of your iPhoto, v6.

iPhoto is no longer developed and no longer sold by Apple. You might consider buying an iLIfe 08 or 09 install disk, but be warned, updates to these versions may not be available now.

iPhoto is no longer developed or sold by Apple. If you upgrade to OS 10.10.3 (minimum) then you can use the new Photos app with your existing iPhoto library.

With your MacOS X version you could be running iPhoto '11. version 9.2.4.

There are no free updates from iPhoto 6.0.6 to to iPhoto '11, any version.  It is a paid major upgrade.

You need to purchase an installer for iPhoto '11,  but Apple does no longer sell them. You could try to get an installer DVD for iLife '11 from Amazon or eBay.

Then update from Apple's download page to iPhoto 9.2.3 - use this link:  iPhoto 9.2.3

The iPhoto 9.2.4 updater does not seem to be available on the downloads page  Apple - Support - Downloads

Thanks for the advice, sadly my IMac though perfectly serviceable can only accept up to Snow Leopard, all sorts of other security problems with Safari and mail means they are virtually useless and have to switch to competitors apps such as firefox and Google Chrome to retain some functionalty in the computer other than old storage memory. Sigh, guess this AAPL planned redundancy for hard ware.

Snow Leopard was one of the best and most stable systems Apple ever made. Sometimes I wish I would have stayed with Snow on my 2011 MacBook Pro. I am surprised about the Safari and Mail issues you are experiencing. Have you checked in the System Sosftware forums if there are s a fix for this?

your Mac with Snow Leopard can run  the early versions of iPhoto that are still sold outside the App Store. Problematic are the new macs with El Capitan that come without iPhoto and where it is impossible at all to purchase a compatible iPhoto version. don't buy a new Mac with El Capitan if you want to use iPhoto.

Don't start me on El Capitan as an upgrade from Yosemite, what a disaster so far. Yes you are right about Snow Leopard, but one gets issues now with mail on Google mail, claiming secuity not up to scratch, and Safari. I will check the software forums as you suggest, but I think is really an issue AAPL should address for their clients with perfectly serviceable products out there, and the millions that were very happy with Snow Leopard, as you say one of the best os's from AAPL.
