MacBook Pro 13 won't turn on MagSafe flashes green, power light on front flashes

Macbook battery ran out before I could charge. Now when attached to the MagSafe power cable, the green led flashes 2 seconds, and the power light on the front flashes for half a second. The fan spins as it seems to be trying to power up, then dies. when the power button is pressed, the magsafe light stays on. Have tried to reset SMC, but this doesn't seem to have done anything. Next I took the battery connector off, but the symptoms above persist. Any ideas appreciated.

Left it connected to the power adapter which began to give an unblinking orange LED. Then pressed the power button and it powered up. Boom. Now the MagSafe is giving a flashing green and the charge is dropping. I have no spare power adapter to check to see if the fault is only on that. Is it worth doing the SMC reset anyway to see if that fixes it?
