Mac OS X--If you have your password connected to your Apple ID:
OS X El Capitan: Reset a login password
If not: you have to restart into The Recovery Partition:
-- restart while holding down the CMD+R keys.
--When the "OS X Utilities" screen appears, select "Utilities"->"Terminal" from the menu bar.
--In the Terminal window, type:
resetpassword
(one word no spaces) and press return.
--The "Reset Password" window opens.
--Select your boot volume when it is not selected automatically.
--In the menu "Select the user account" select your user account when not already selected.
--Follow the prompts to reset the password (use a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, 0-9).
--Write the password down on a piece of paper.
--Select Restart from the apple menu.
