Log in problems on new Macbook Pro

I gave my partner a new Macbook Pro for Xmas 2015 (OS X El Capitan 10.11 or 12?). She set it up (followed all prompts) and turned it off. When she opened it again she was prompted for a log in password but she NEVER was asked to set up a log in password. We have tried all sorts of ways to correct it using Apple ID etc and reset but it still asks for a log in password. Does anyone have any ideas about solving this problem? The on line chat is busy, the phone help wait time is horrendous.
