Can I password protect individual files?

I have a late 2009 iMac running OS El Capitan with no login password. Is it possible to password protect individual files? Thanks.

Clickhereand follow the instructions to create an encrypted disk image for them. Don't add its password to the keychain.

Thanks Niel. I meant to say individual folders, not files, but it sounds like the disk image would, in essence, be the folder. Thank you! Jim
