Q: os el capitan downgraded to yosemite

I was running El Capitan latest update. The other day I was having trouble with some pop up virus alerts from a streaming site. I needed do a few force quits on Safari and a few hard shut downs on the laptop because it was freezing on restarts. It then booted up in the Yosemite 10.10.5 and is still doing so. There seems to be no sign that El Capitan was ever installed. Runs fine now. Actually better. El Capitan ran very slow. Many spinning wheels

Any Ideas??

That doesn't make any sense.  A computer doesn't downgrade itself after a reboot.  Go up to  --> About This Mac and tell us what OS your computer is currently running.  Also, it's not a good idea to go on those streaming sites for precisely the reason you discovered; they're loaded with pop-ups that hijack your browser, possibly enticing you to download some garbage product, all in the name of making the pop-ups stop.  All you had to do to eliminate this was Force Quit Safari, then reopen Safari in Safe Mode, by holding down the Shift key.  Safe Mode prevents any previous windows/tabs from reopening.

Could you also post your EtreCheck report for us?  Download the program and let it run, copying the status report to paste here.  If El Capitan is running slow for you, there's probably a good reason for that, and we'll see it in your report.

It can't. The files no longer exist to be "downgraded" to. You never had El Capitan installed or you restored from a backup.

What you did have installed is a lot of crapware.

    MacBooster -- useless crap

The following are known problems causes crashing and other issues. I don't know if any have functional versions available:

    RIM Blackberry

    Samsung DevGuru stuff

    Kies app

I'm not sure about the status of Hotspot Shield. Like any other system mod, you will have to actively check for updated software at each OS update. Most developers can't seem to keep up with Apple's pace of updates and upgrades.

I don't know if there are any problems with the Seagate software, but I'm not sure why you need drivers for a hard drive.

As an aside, you've still got an old DotMac user agent loading; you can find it in your user/Library/LauncAgents folder. Just delete it.

    • I would uninstall Google Chrome.  It's a massive RAM hog and slows down your system.  It requires numerous "helper" applications to run.  If you don't like Safari, I'd use Firefox.  It's less memory intensive.
    • Uninstall ClamxAV and Intego Virus Barrier.  For one, no computer, not even PCs, need two anti-virus programs running at the same time, and two, there is no virus currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X, so anti-virus programs, while well-meaning, are not necessary.

I'm not too well-versed on all the drivers you have installed, so I can't say with any certainty whether you should keep them or uninstall them, but I will say you have a lot of Internet plug-ins, and I can't imagine they help your system run any smoother or quicker.

I admit I have a lot of garbage installed. Most of which I no longer use. But doesn't explain how El Capitan that I've been using for months is no longer there.

You couldn't have been using El Capitan for months.  I'm sorry, but that's not how it works.  You don't upgrade your operating system, reboot your computer, then find yourself running the previous operating system.  Either you hadn't actually upgraded to El Capitan from Yosemite, or you reverted back to Yosemite from El Capitan via a Time Machine backup.  Operating systems do not spontaneously downgrade themselves like that.

As you can see by the Etrecheck, Time machine isn't even configured. So no back up came from there.

I do have another Macbook Pro attached to the same Apple account. Is it possible the app store has gotten the 2 lab tops confused?

The "etrecheck" stuff is irrelevant to your question, obviously. Please start up the computer while holding down the option key. A row of icons will appear, representing the available startup volumes. If there's more than one choice, try one that isn't selected.
