Q: iPhoto 9.5.1 (via iTunes) doesn't see photos on my old iPod Touch

Hello,

I'm trying to retire my old iPod Touch (2nd generation - iPod 2,1, 32GB, A1288).   Specifically, I'm trying to transfer all of the photos from it.

I'm using iTunes (12.3.2) on my MacBook (2.9 GHz Core i7 (I7-3520M), 750GB, A1278) running Mavericks 10.9.5.

iTunes did recognize the iPod, and detects Music, Movies, Podcasts. (I don't have any TV Shows, Books, or Audiobooks on my iPod, so am not sure if iTunes would detect those).

However, iPhoto (9.5.1) only detects my Saved Photos on the iPod. It does not see the Photo Library, Last Import iPhoto, Last 12 months, or any of my albums.

Are these photos inaccessible with this version of iPhoto?

Thanks - Robin

Have these albums been synced to the iPod using iTunes?   Synched photos cannot be imported to iPhoto using USB, only photos in the camera roll or saved photos. iTunes Photo Sync is one-way: See this link:  Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support

Yes, I used an old version of iPhoto on an old iBook (now inoperable) to sync my photos (via iTunes) on the iPod Touch Gen 2 to the iBook, then created the albums in that old iPhoto on that iBook, which were sync'ed back to the iPod on subsequent syncs.

But wouldn't the Photo Library on my old iPod (which contains all the photos and isn't really an album)  show up on iPhoto 9.5.1 on my MacBook?

(I notice that the main set of photos on my old iPod Touch is called "Photo Library" but on my iPhone 5, is called "Camera Roll".)

iPhoto 9.5.1 is seeing only saved photos or the Camera Roll. The photos synced with iTunes are stored separately. Your iPod can show them, but iPhoto on the Mac cannot access them.

Apple says:  Sync photos from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes - Apple Support

    • You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

leonie - Thank you for the clarification. I didn't see the difference between photos that originated from my iPod (taken by its camera or saved from the web, e.g.) and photos that originate from my computer (The Photo Library and its albums in iPhoto).  When I created new photos on the iPod as a test, it was put into a Saved Photo section, which I could sync to my MacBook.

I think the confusion arose, because at some time in the past, the photos I wanted to retrieve from my iPod in the Photo Library, which came from the iPhoto on my old iBook, had actually originated in my iPod in the Camera Roll. They had been sync'ed some time ago to the iBook iPhoto, and I subsequently deleted the Camera Roll. When the Photo Library in iPhoto was sync'ed back to the iPod, it was saved as the Photo Library, so it was essentially originating from the computer (iBook).

I'll start emailing the photos as Apple instructs in this case.
