Q: why are all the subtitles on for all my apps (iTunes, Netflix, HBO Go, etc.) even though I have turned off closed captioning and restarted my new apple tv?

I have a new apple TV and even though the closed captioning is turned off in settings,  I have subtitles appearing in all my apps (iTunes, Netflix, HBOGo, etc).  Even after manually asking siri to turn off the subtitles, when Netflix rolls to the next episodes the subtitles come back. I have toggled the on/off for closed captioning, checked for software updates and restarted the device, to no avail

It sounds like you have voiceover enabled...

however, it's a known issue in the Netflix app that subtitles are enabled by default. Many have sent feedback to Netflix to correct the issue with their app...

Turn on VoiceOver on your Apple TV - Apple Support

    Apple TV (4th generation)

If you turned on VoiceOver when you set up your Apple TV, you can use the accessibility shortcut to turn VoiceOver back on. Just press the Menu button three times to turn VoiceOver back on.

You can also go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver, then turn VoiceOver on.

To turn the shortcut on, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut, then select VoiceOver.
