Q: Mail not sending in El Capitan on MacBook Pro

Ok, here it goes:

MacBookPro early 2011, El Capitan 10.11.2, however this started when she was still on Yosemite and I was hoping El Capitan would fix it.

I have tried all suggestions I have read so far.  My sister can get mail, however she cannot send any. (iCloud on the web works fine!)  I have logged out of iCloud, restarted the computer and logged back in.  No change.

I have her account on my MBP and all works fine.  I have checked all her settings and they match exactly.

I am thinking that some preference is corrupted, but I can't find one that seems to related to mail, other than some "mail shared.plist".  When I look in my "Mail folder in my library under MailData I cannot find anything that remotely seems to have anything to do with the SMPT server.

I am at a complete loss, and would appreciate any assistance anybody can provide.

Helga

What exactly happens when you try to send mail?

Well the email cannot be sent comment.

In the connection doctor it's talking as if we were using a different server other than iCloud!

Mail goes into Outbox and sits there.

Can't give you anymore information as I don't have access to her computer right now.  However, I checked the settings on my MBP (where I set up an account for her) and ALL is correctly functioning from there.

I am sorry, I thought from my signature you would notice.  I accidentally used my sister's Apple ID  to log in, as I have them both to try to help her.

Right now I am working on aliases.  I am thinking something is wrong on that end.   We'll see.

From the Mail menu bar, please select

              Window â–¹ Connection Doctor

Click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. Try to send a message and post the text that appears.

I had an odd problem similar to that for a while.  In Mail, go to Preferences.  Under Accounts check the account information for the offending account.   Look at the outgoing mail server and make sure it is the correct server for the mail account that is causing the problem.

She only uses the iCloud SMTP server.  Right now it's too late in Germany.  I'll try again later this week to see if I can screen share with her or get a screen shot of the connection doctor.

    Thanks for the help.

LincDavis, thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, I was able to go in to her MBP and work on it yesterday.  Also, I checked her MBP against my MBP where I have her account set up and ALL preferences are identical down to the ports in ALL areas.

Connection Doctor says: (and when I click on the text the red dot appears)

useratmac.com is my change from actual email account.

    The logs repeatedly say:

    Dec 30 00:09:08  Mail[1034] <Debug>: Could not connect: <MFSMTPConnection: 0x7fbb8643c710> (Connected) account: <MFSMTPAccount: 0x7fbb858238f0> useratmac.com p10-smtp.mail.me.com (24398127-D627-41D8-B273-63A407C2375F)

hostname: p10-smtp.mail.me.com, port: 465, security layer: kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelTLSv1 (Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=60 "Operation timed out")

I copied the mess of it on a pages document here:

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and sign back in. No data will be removed from the servers. That said, you should always have a current archive of the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.

Please open the Mail preferences window and select the Accounts tab. Under Account Information, select your icloud.com address from the menu labeled Alias, if it's not already selected. Test.

I am sorry to tell you, but I have done all of that so many times it's not worth counting anymore.  I am pretty versed with Macs, I am not a novice.  I have been using Mac Computers for the past 30 years (since 1988 anyhow). The reason I posted on this forum is because I am stumped.  EVERYTHING works with identical credentials on my MBP in the US. It has to have something to do with some preference on her MBP because I have now tested it all with screen sharing and her doing it.

In the Connection Doctor window, please double-click the iCloud SMTP server. Another window will open, showing the settings of the iCloud outgoing mail account.

    1. In the Account Information section, verify that the selection in the menu labeled

              TLS Certificate

    is None.

In the Advanced section, verify that the settings are as follows.

    2. The box marked

Automatically detect and maintain account settings

    should be checked.

    3. The Port setting should be 587.

    4. The box marked Use SSL should be checked.

    5. In the menu labeled Authentication, the selection should be Apple Token.

    6. The box marked

              Allow insecure authentication

    should not be checked.

    7. The primary address associated with the iCloud account (not an alias) should be entered in the field labeled

              User Name

    8. The Password field should be empty. The password is (or should be) stored in the keychain.

Make any needed changes, then click OK and close the window. Test.
