You need a SIM card, and if the phone is locked to a carrier, the SIM must be from that carrier. It does not have to be a currently active SIM; it can be one that has been deactivated. You do not need an Apple laptop; you can activate it with Windows 7 or later, or Mac OS X 10.7 or later.
