Q: BootCamp won't boot normally after a partition resize

Hi!

I read a lot about this issue since yesterday, but i haven't found a solution yet, so i'm asking for help! Here's the story.

I have a windows 7 partition on my iMac for gaming purpose. Last week, i resized my partitions without any problem using Disk Utility and a little software on Windows. Yesterday, i did the exact same thing because i needed a bit more space in my windows partition. After resizing in Disk Utility, i tried to switch over to my windows partition but it wouldn't appear on the startup screen.

With the help of another topic, i managed to make it bootable again, but now i'm getting «Missing operating system» error.

I already tried to use my Windows 7 installation disc to repair windows, but it's not able to finish the process.

I could delete the windows partition and reinstall windows on a fresh start, but it mean going over the process of downloading + installing all my games... so i'm hoping someone could help me bring my windows back to life!

I suspect you are gonna ask me to provide the input from this:

1. diskutil list

2. sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

3. sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

... so here they are!

Thank you!

These are non-standard steps and should not be used for normal BC/OSX dual boot setup.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see the sample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers. Please see the sample Q&A before you execute these steps.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    5. H (chooses Hybrid)
    6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3
    7. Y  (Good for GRUB question)
    8. N  (part 2 boot flag)
    9. N  (part 3 boot flag)
    10. Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    11. O  (print current Hybrid MBR)
    12. W (Write the new MBR)
    13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

I just tried again. It still say there's nothing to repair... I'm about to give up and simply wipe the partition and do a fresh start. At least i was able to do a back-up of my Steam files so i should save a bit of downloading time.

No, i don't remember getting an error message that time. It simply could repair anything.

But to be honest, i have a bigger problem now. Even my OSX partition won't boot. I'm stuck on the spinning gear and grey Apple screen for 20 minutes...

The problem is, it's trying to boot on the Windows partition. So i can't simply old SHIFT while booting. I have to hold ALT, get to the partition menu and choose Mac. If i hold SHIFT from this point, the computer eventually turn off by itself.
