Nikon Capture NX2 clean install on El Capitan

Please can any one help me find a simple workaround for installing Nikon Capture NX2 on a new mac running El Capitan?

Users who have Nikon Capture NX2 already installed on their computer before upgrading to El Capitan find the app still works.

Is it possible to use disk utility in some way to transfer the app directly from an older mac running Mavericks (that Nikon Capture NX2 works on) to a USB and then load the application on to the new mac running El Capitan to bypass the installation 'hanging' up and or bypass the SIP that maybe causing the installation to fail?

Tried this but still hangs up at final point of install ...

Load Nikon Capture NX-2 on Mac OS 10.11.2
• Mount the Capture NX-2 installation disk image (.dmg) file.
• Launch the Terminal application (located in Applications / Utilities).
• Copy the following line, paste it into the Terminal window, then press the enter key.
cd /Volumes/Capture\ NX\ 2\ Setup/
• Copy the following line, paste it into the Terminal window, then press the enter key.
cp -R .Capture\ NX\ Setup.pkg ~/desktop/Capture\ NX\ Setup.pkg
• Terminal placed a "Capture NX Setup.pkg" file on desktop.

Quit Terminal.
• Control click on the Capture NX Setup.pkg file and choose "Show Package Contents".
• Navigate to the Contents / Resources folder and delete the 2 items called "InstallationCheck" and "InstallationCheck.applescript".
• Return to the "Capture NX Setup.pkg" file and double click it to begin installing NX-2 as usual.

Also tried copying working app folder and library app support folder and dropping in to correct place - app opens but will not run due to not recognizing legitimate Nikon product key.

Many Thanks!

Well, that's an incredibly ugly bug! Intuit had a doozy like that with QuickBooks Pro for Mac. One of the updates would place a temporary file on the desktop. At the end of the installation, it was supposed to delete that file. But whoever wrote the install script entered the path name wrong, and instead of deleting the one item on your desktop, it deleted the entire user desktop folder! If you had a lots of files and folders sitting there, they were suddenly gone, and very difficult to recover even with an app such as Data Rescue.

From what I have seen in various threads on different sites, the Nikon software

is pretty much trash (and this was from some apparently hard core Nikon owners)

and strongly suggested to look for other alternatives. It may be free, but not worth all

the hassle.

FWIW, I gave up on it quite early as it would constantly lock up, crash, and was basically

just plain slow (NX-i and companion apps).

Bit the bullet and bought Adobe Lightroom and am glad I did (only thing left

that doesn't require Adobe's ball and chain subscription.)

Couldn't agree more. For years I've used Photoshop's built-in Camera RAW plugin for editing my Nikon RAW images. Based on the note (and at least that part is true) that Nikon's software does a better job of rendering color of their RAW images since they know exactly how the data is captured and written, I tried the free Capture NX-D in Yosemite.

Yup, great color rendition. Everything else? Slow as molasses. Lot's of reviews on Nikon's site all proclaiming how blazing fast it is. Not sure what these folks are comparing the speed to. I can get through a dozen images in Photoshop in the time it takes to do one or two in Capture NX-D.

What the NX-D color renditioning is doing is taking some of

the in camera rendering setting (which is automatically applied in JPEGs)

and applies them to the RAW imports. Adobe apps don't do this and only

get the true RAW data. However, in Lightroom and I am sure in Camera RAW,

you can go to Camera Calibration and select different "profiles" which relate to

the common in camera settings. I use Camera Standard myself. These are based

on Adobe supplied profiles for each camera that they have supported (pretty much

every DSLR).

To see all the cameras supported, see Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Camera Profiles/Camera.

Except I never have any of my Nikons setup to take the RAW+JPEG pair. I shoot RAW only. The color in NX-D is always more natural and closer to what I remember shooting than Camera RAW displays. Now if only it weren't so dang slow.

Hello Fancesco

Worth a trying as long shot if you know any one with a Mac running Yosemite, try installing and activating Nikon Capture NX 2 with your product key.

If all is working ok ...

Locate and copy folder - HD / Applications / Nikon Software / Capture NX 2/Capture NX 2.app/Contents/Resources /

Locate and copy folder - HD / Library / Application Support / Nikon / Capture NX 2

With SIP disabled....

Place Nikon Software / Capture NX 2 folder into the 'Applications' folder on Mac running El Capitan

Place Application Support / Nikon / Capture NX 2 into 'Library/Application Support' folder on Mac running El Capitan

Best

ohhhhhhhh... YES!!!

When I upgraded to El Capitan I changed the old SSD for a larger one.

Fortunately didn't erased the previous one.

Copied the folders as you suggested, prompted for the serial, typed it... et voilà:

NX2

View NX

Nikon Tansfer

Picture Contro Utility

are back!!!!

Probably it works the same way recovering the folders from a TM backup.

Thank you very very much, Miffy O, I really appreciated your help, your patience and your skills :)))

Hello,

It will not load as a new installation on El Capitan - I have tried every possible way to do this, including modifying the installer. However, it will work after upgrade, with full functionally including the Nik Color Efex Pro 3 filters, if previosly installed under Yosemite.

It's a pity that one of the ex-Nik software guys in Germany, who developed this software, could not come up with a soluition. Also, make Nikon D7200 readable in Nikon Capture NX 2.4.7, without modifiying the file with a text editor, to look like the D5200.

After reading about all the problems with both Apple and Nikon regarding this issue, I've come up with a solution that's a little old school, but I think would work; I have copies of new, never used discs of View and Capture NX 2 and a copy of Hogen's "After The Shoot". I purchased a Mac Mini recently, it's already updated with El Capitan, so I can't catch it and try anything with Yosemite. But what I do have is a local electronic repair shop that repairs and sells old legacy computers; I already have a good older spare monitor for photo editing, so...
