How NOT To Sync Podcasts Across Devices - Advice Please

I'm pulling my hair out for a solution to this issue and I am getting nowhere. Any help or hints greatly appreciated.

I have a Mac on which is my central iTunes library. Everything I do is managed from here apart from iCloud data syncing.

I have 2 iPhones, one mine one my sons and we both enjoy the same podcasts.

I have the podcasts subscribed to on the Mac and I manually manage these as I see fit so I have deletion/updates disabled. I have also set iTunes not to sync playback position or podcast subscriptions etc with other devices.

My iPhone is configured not to sync podcasts in the Podcasts app but it gets all the podcasts sync'd when I connect it to the Mac and sync 'by wire'. I know this is manual but I like to maintain my own podcast lists etc plus I have added some of my own from audio I have recorded.

My sons iPhone is also configured not to sync podcasts in the app and again this phone gets all the podcasts sync'd when it is connected to the Mac.

Both phones share the same iTunes store account as I have lots of in-app purchases that using Family Sharing would render unusable. iCloud is setup to use our own separate accounts for iCloud data.

The trouble that I am having is no matter what I do when my son listens to a podcast ahead of me, my iPhone and the Mac get their playback positions updated. If I reset them on the Mac then my sons iPhone suddenly has unlistened to podcasts the have already been heard.

I can find no way to maintain completely separate devices so that no matter who listens to a podcast, no matter where, all the other devices remain untouched in terms of playback position.

Does anyone have a similar setup which works that they could share some wisdom on? I can't be the only one to be doing this surely?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

The best way for two users to share one Mac is to set up a separate OS X user account for each user. And that's for general usage, not just for iTunes. You can be an Admin user, who needs to give permission to make system level changes (such as installing new apps and changing network settings). Your son can be a Standard user. When logged in to the respective user accounts, it's like a different Mac for each user. That includes things like Mail and Calendar, AND a separate iTunes library in each user account.

Setting up a new user account is done in System Preferences Users & Groups pane. If you enable Fast User Switching, both users can be logged in at the same time. When you and your son switch between user accounts (password still required), both users are logged in, so an ongoing process (like a large download) can continue in one user account while the other user account is being used.

Family Sharing can be used, if desired, to share iTunes Store purchases between family members who have their own Apple ID. I'm not familiar with the issue you mentioned.

Since the iTunes library is separate for each user, there will be no problem with the play count of podcasts and other conflicts.

Thanks for the information but this solution simply isn't feasible for me. I have a 15000+ track iTunes library that I want to share and won't be able to do this by separating the IDs.

FYI when using family sharing, in-app purchases cannot be shared. Thus is you were to buy an app such the Hipstamatic camera app you can share the main app but NOT any lenses or films that are purchased in-app, they must be repurchased. This is not good for families with games etc that need to be shared that have had in-app purchases done against the main account.

My main query relates to the playback position sharing of podcasts rather than 2 users on one Mac. I have found since posting that turning off the options in iTunes means they changes don't get reflected there over-the-air but they do across the iOS devices regardless of configuration. The changes get reflected inside iTunes only when the devices are sync'd to iTunes. I simply want each iOS device and iTunes to maintain their own playback positions and NOT share them in anyway.

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to reply.

Yes, it is very simple.

You can each have your own iTunes account, your own computer login and use the same iTunes library and same tracks.

  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Move your entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to /Users/Shared/.
  3. Hold Option and launch iTunes.
  4. Select Choose library...
  5. Select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.
  6. You are now using the library.
  7. Quit iTunes.

now

  1. Create a new computer user account for your son.
  2. Hold Option and launch iTunes.
  3. Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.

That's it.

Just quit iTunes when switching users as you cannot have the same iTunes library file open with multiple users.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm concerned that after all this work by sharing the library I'll be in exactly the same position as I am now in that the Podcasts will sync'd from there and thus across the devices. Its the iOS to iOS syncing that is giving me the issue at the moment, not iTunes. Ideally I'd like to fix iTunes as well so only my iPhone updates iTunes and iTunes updates it. My sons iPhone should stay separate, as configured. But its not working that way. I need to keep the same iTunes store account on each device,

Both phones share the same iTunes store account

This is likely the culprit.

iTunes knows the difference between devices but since iTunes thinks they are both yours, it syncs this data.

As far as in-app purchases, this isn't a problem.

He can still load apps (and in-app purchases) purchased with your account onto his iPhone using iTunes.

I don't have family sharing set up but simply use three different iTunes accounts (using the same iTunes library).
