Netgear WG511 v2 ...

Hello,

I have gone through this forum but as there are so many specific questions, I thought I'd put in one of my own;

Currently, I am working with an iBook G4 and an Airport Express. The AI is plugged in to my modem and, to date, seems to work quite well. Seperately, I have a laptop with Windows XP installed. Sitting in the card slot is a Netgear WG511 v2 wireless PC card (this card has worked before on another wireless system so I know it's good).

Unless you haven't guessed, I would like to have the PC run off the same wifi network as my Mac. The Netgear card can pick up the signal and I have already put the wifi password into the software ... however, the computer still says that it's not connected but the software says that it is.

If anyone out there can give the slightest hint as to what I should be doing to correct this, I would be very grateful.

Regards and thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.

With so many laptops in cafes in the area (I live in the heart of a city, 2 floors above one in particular), I am loathed to turn off the password protection. However, it would appear that the PC is having trouble finding a new IP address.

I have the password for a neighbour's wifi system upstairs but would prefer to use my own.

Just to verify that your PC is able to access other wireless networks, can you connect with your neighbor's network? If not, then there is something amiss with either your PC's wireless hardware or it's settings.

And, if it can, then we need to look into the security settings on both AirPort & the PC to see why it can't connect.

No problem. I'm glad to help.

To make things easier, let's do a "factory default" reset, so that your AX will be in it's original "out-of-the-box" configuration with no encryption enabled.

Then follow these instructions to set up encryption:
To set up wireless security on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:

Change Wireless Security
- Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
- Password: <enter your desired network password or phrase>
- Verify Password: <re-enter your desired network password or phrase>
- Encryption Type: WPA and WPA2
- Click "OK"

Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
- Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)

OK, panic over ... I found the settings in the Applications > Utilities > Airport Setup Assistant ...

New secure network has been created with a WPA2 password - and the Netgear card found the WPA signal and is up and running!

Thank you SO much for your help. I'm very pleased that I bought a Mac as the level of help on this forum (from those more a-tune with these machines) is so much more pleasurable than those with PCs ... thank you again!
