Q: Installing Apps on New MacBook

I just got a new MacBook for Christmas and need to install Office 2011 and Adobe Creative Suite 3 on it.  Since there is no disc drive, how can I do this?  I am asking as I have installed these successfully on two desktops and an old laptop.  I tried bringing them over via the special USB C to USB adapter.

Word fires up and works but says it was not installed properly and needs to reinstall.  It asks for the product key, which I enter correctly only to have it say it is invalid, despite being valid before.

Adobe asks for the serial # which it says is invalid.

In both cases I have the code pasted on the back of the case.

What is going on and how do I fix it?  Thanks.

If your other computers still work, you can try Use the CD or DVD drive from another computer with your Mac - Apple Support

I'm not sure if you can install from that, but worth a try before buying an external reader.

If the install won't work over Remote Disk, perhaps you can image the disk using Disk Utility on the new Mac. Then, you can mount the image to run the installer directly on that new Mac.

Thanks for the info.  I have an iMac ca. 2011 running Snow Leopard that has a drive and could run it.  Both Office and Adobe are installed and working well.  In both cases it keeps wanting the serial # or code but rejects it as not being valid.  I don't get it as it worked fine on the iMac.  Any suggestions?

I am not sure about remote disk.  How would that work?  Thanks.

I am not sure about remote disk.  How would that work?  Thanks.

On the old Mac, open the Sharing System preferences and enable CD/DVD Sharing. I'm not sure exactly which System Pref it is in for that OS, though.

Once enabled on both computers, you will see Remote Disk in the Devices section of Finder (or in Go to Computer) on the new Mac.

Put the installation disks into the old Mac's DVD drive and then connect to it using the Remote Disk from the new Mac.

Then, you can run the installer from the disk. If that doesn't accept the license key, then I'm not sure what is wrong.

OK, I am halfway there as surprisingly, it worked with the remote disk item.  Is this the trade off to not having a disk drive in the MacBooks now?  I was able to get the Office Suite installed and it operates properly with no baloney.

What did NOT work was the Adobe Creative Suite 3.  When I thought I had it from this computer, it kept asking for the key code and then saying it was not correct.  I received this program back in 2007 when I was on the music staff at Miami University in Ohio.  The disks say student licensing, so I wonder about that.  I tried to go to Adobe's site, entered the code and was told that it was already registered.  It appears that it would work in El Cap since it asked for the code.  I have two disks as a part of this suite with one saying it is Application and the other saying it is Content.  Do you have any advice for this one?

    Thanks.

According to Roaring Apps, Illustrator and Photoshop do work, but the rest of the suite has no confirmation.

    I can't explain why it doesn't install.

I don't know if Adobe uses this particular scheme, but some anti-piracy measures include a maximum number of installs. But, I think it just tells you that as opposed to saying the code isn't valid.

It also may require deactivation on the other Mac that it was installed on, but, again, that error message doesn't sound like what I would use, and activation usually occurs after install.

Some Adobe products may require your deactivating the software on on your older Mac before it will activate on the newer Mac.

I think at this point I will call Adobe support, if I can find a number, and ask about this as Miami having bought it and registered the serial number, is probably the issue.  Thanks to all

It's possible the instance of CS3 is installed on another computer, you should be allowed to install on two computers without incident.

To install you need to unregister the app from an instance of Photoshop where it running on your other mac.

I believe it is under the Help menu.

If Adobe detects any instance of the serial number running on two instances of an OS (another computer or the same computer with a virtualized OS trying to run it) it will prevent the second instance.

However this does not under any circumstance preclude Creative Suite 3 will run on El Capitan and do not expect any support from either Adobe or Apple in the event you run into a problem.

Those who have gotten pre-cloud versions of suite to run on the mac should do a clean install of the app in an administrative account, then make sure you download and install the legacy Java for Applications from Apple

Download Java for OS X 2015-001

If you can't get CS3 to install or register, you may want to consider alternative products.

Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer have been praised for being decent, professional alternatives to Photoshop and Illustrator, at a fraction of the cost, on the Mac App Store. (I'm not involved with the company: just a happy user!) Other alternatives include iDraw and Pixelmator.

Nothing as good as InDesign yet, for reasonable money, though there are some competent semi-pro DTP packages. Plenty of PDF tools (built-in to OS X, and third-party) instead of Acrobat.

And there's always NeoOffice or LibreOffice instead of MS Office, too!

Acquiring a new product is fine as I only use Acobe Acrobat to crop pictures anyway.  I do a lot of scanning of vintage sports cards and chop them up into individual jpegs and enlarge them.  What other way could I do this with a different app?

    Thanks.

Acrobat is just about the clumsiest way to crop photos. It's not an image editor. You can do the same thing with the included Preview app. Or, if you prefer much more image processing power than that, there's the free open source app, GIMP. Does much of what Photoshop does. Click on the right hand orange button to get a Mac .dmg file to install it.

Preview can do that, it's free.

Yes, Preview can crop. Affinity Photo can crop. Pixelmator can crop. GIMP can crop. Pretty much any photo editor can crop an image and save it.

Acrobat is designed for PDF editing, so if you are working with JPEGs or TIFFs from scans mostly, there's no need to use it at all.

That sounds great but my uneducated self cannot figure out how to crop using Preview.  I view the finished products in Preview but need a step-be-step on how to do this..  I am hopeful that I will be able to deep six Adobe.  Thanks.
