Q: Can't turn off Location Services on new iPhone

For some reason, there is no way to turn off the Location Services on my daughter's new iPhone 6S. We switched/upgraded her from an old iPhone 5, but were sure to turn Find My Phone/Find My Friends settings off. In addition, the iPhone 5 was wiped clean. However, the Location Services cannot be turned off on the new iPhone...the toggle switch is "greyed". Same in iCloud settings, same in General settings.

The idea was to turn on the Find My Friends for the new phone but that's not possible since it states that this service is being handled by the iPhone 5...which no longer is active. No matter what I try (restarting, resetting Location/Privacy settings, turning off all network connections), I am unable to adjust the Location Services (On/Off) and subsequently, the Share Location setting.

The other 3 phones we got (6s as well) do not have the issue and work properly, including the Location Services toggle button.

    Hi, pairof9s.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are unable to modify the Location Services setting on your daughter's new iPhone 6s.  It sounds like you may have restored from the old iPhone's backup and restrictions are enable that prevent modifications to certain features.  You can check this by going to Settings > General > Restrictions and see if these are enabled.  You can then temporarily disable restrictions so you can modify this setting.  Take a look at the article below for more information.

About Restrictions (parental controls) on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

In reference to not being able to enable Find My Friends, you may just need to remove the iPhone 5 from the Find My iPhone feature via iCloud.com.  Take a look at the article below for instructions on how to remove the device.

iCloud: Remove your device from Find My iPhone

    Cheers

Actually, I'll never know...we changed back our service to the old phones! In short, Sprint's service was absolutely horrible compared to previous AT&T: choppy calls, 80% data via 3G, non-requested service add-ones, incorrect billing, and one line never transferred to existing phone number.

You're right that the restrictions had been set on that phone. While I had turned restrictions off, I had not changed the Share Location setting to off before disabling the phone. So indeed the "old" iPhone 5 was overriding the new iPhone 6. I did go online and delete tthe iPhone 5, but again, I'll never know because we changed back to AT&T and the Restore backup established old settings to the iPhone 5.

I do know through searching the Apple ID site that another method around this is to set up two-step authentication. This will prevent other legacy devices from being able to control Share Location services.

    Thanks for the advice!
