AT&T Data Cancellation ?

I previously had an iPad where I managed my data from Settings on the device. Two years ago I went to Best Buy and purchased a new iPad. I stupidly let them set up an AT&T account for me. Got stuck into a two year contract and have been paying a lot more than I previously was. My two year contract is up in a few weeks. Here's my question....

I would like to cancel my data account with AT&T. Once I call and cancel that plan with AT&T will my iPad automatically revert to giving me the option of selecting a data plan from the Settings menu of my device? Or do I just lose all ability to connect using a data plan?

Hopefully this question makes sense because I really need to find an answer soon. I've searched online and all over the Apple website with no luck at finding an answer.

iPad Air, null

Hello there, ADeAce.

It sounds like you are trying to find out how cancelling your Data Plan with your carrier will affect the options of your iPad. The following Knowledge Base article provides the steps to review for deactivating your iPad:

iPad: How to deactivate a cellular data account

Follow these steps to determine which steps need to be taken to deactivate your cellular data account:

Tap Settings > Cellular Data.

  1. If you see a button labeled View Account, tap it.
    • An account login screen will appear. Log in and follow the prompts to deactivate your account.
    • If you get a message saying that the account type is not supported, contact your carrier and ask them to deactivate your account.
  2. If you do not see a button labeled View Account, contact the carrier and ask them to deactivate your account.

There is also some additional information on the functionality of cellular data services here:

Activate cellular data service on your iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 or later

If you were using an iPad that had the Apple SIM, once you have activated it with AT&T, you will have to purchase another Apple SIM from the Apple store to be able to use the changing capabilities of the Apple SIM. This is something that AT&T did, and they are not cooperating well with the use of the Apple SIM. The SIM is not that expensive, but it will restore the ability to do as you are asking.
