Q: Apple Mail displays incorrect number of unread messages
Hi
Apple mail on my iPad is connected to my Microsoft Hotmail account. I have about a dozen email boxes within my Hotmail account (in addition to the standard "Inbox)" and Hotmail sorts my emails into each box based on rules I've created.
Several months ago, Apple mail started to display the number of unread emails in one of my email boxes incorrectly. Just recently, it started displaying the number of unread emails in a second box incorrectly. In one, Apple mail displays 4 unread emails although that one is almost always empty. In the other, which always has quite a few read email in it, Apple mail displays 6 more unread emails than exist. That is, if there are 2 unread emails, Apple mail says I have 8.
- I've checked the email boxes in my Hotmail account by going there in my browser to find out if there are more unread emails than Apple mail is downloading. There are not.
- I downloaded the Microsoft Outlook app to check and it displays the correct number of unread emails for each box.
Is there a way to get Apple mail to correctly display the number of unread emails?
Thanks.

Hello there Ray_ES,
It sounds like it is just your Apple Mail app that is showing the incorrect number of emails on your iPad. I would start by quitting the Mail app and the Settings app:
1. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
2. Swipe left to find the app you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists then I would remove the account from the Settings app, restart the iPad and try again:
- Remove the affected email account from your device with these steps:
- Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Tap the email account.
- Tap Delete Account.
- Add your account again.
