odd bluetooth issue with ios9

I have a 2012 Scion tc that has a Bluetooth enabled stereo that had always worked with my iphone 6 until the ios 9 update. Now, however, it pairs fine but Siri or spoken directions from apple maps or google maps only works if the stereo is in Bluetooth audio mode. If I'm in radio mode or CD mode no audio is heard from the phone except if the phone rings (I can still make and receive calls in these modes though). I've deleted the phone from the stereo and re-paired with no success. Currently running 9.2 but the issue started with 9.0, I made a bug report with Apple soon after the 9.0 update but have never received a response.

Any ideas?
