Installing new RAM in 2012 MacBook Pro???
Hi,
I am going to install more RAM into my 2012 MacBook Pro. Will I lose any information in the process of the installation (e.g. hard drive, etc.)?
thanks.
MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), mid-2012

No. You shouldn't lose any information on the HD.
Make sure that the Mac is completely backed up before attempting to upgrade the RAM.
Then why the recommendation for backing up? Just curious.
A new backup is a precautionary measure. Though not likely, things at times do go wrong. Why run the risk?
Ciao.
I'd have to purchase an external HDD. Don't have the funds right now.

The fundamental question you have to ask is, 'how much is my data worth to me'? In time all HDDs will fail, it simply is when and there often will be no warning. Backups protect you from a disaster if the internal HDD fails. When your financial situation improves, I strongly urge you to get an external HDD for backups.
(I use two separate HDDs both of which duplicate my MBP's internal HDD.)
Ciao.
