Q: Can't upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to El Capitan on iMac

I have tried to upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to El Capitan on my iMac but can't figure it out.

When I check for SW upgrades, it tells me I am on the latest version.

When I download El Capitan from the AppStore, it is not in my downloads.

Is my iMac too old to upgrade to El Capitan?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The installer will take several hours to download; it’ll be in the Applications folder and Dock afterwards.

First thing, is your iMac capable of upgrading to El Capitan.  Requirement are here: Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Secondly, like the previous post pointed out, depending upon your connection speed, it can take a while to download. The file size is over 5 GB. If you are downloading from the App Store, the button should say downloading after you press it.  Also, the installer should go to your App Folder, so look in there to see if it is showing up.

You're mixing the terms "updates" with "upgrades." Software updates is for updates, as in updating from 10.10.4 to 10.10.5. Upgrades are obtained from the App Store, as in upgrading to OS X El Capitan. As previously mentioned, the upgrade installer will download to your Applications folder. Remember that it self deletes after installation, so if you have a slow Internet connection, you may want to make a copy of it to a location outside of the Applications folder before using it or, move it out of the Applications folder before running it.
