Why would bluetooth keyboard and trackpad suddenly stop working?

My Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad suddenly quit. I have ruled out batteries, having tried 3 pair now. Have turned the button the right on. Have gone to system preferences to re-pair them. But it can't find them. It provides the code, which I type in, but to no avail. One time I kept my finger on the ON button on the trackpad and after awhile, the SP pane did see my trackpad--but was not able to connect to it.

What can be wrong? Seems strange that they are both out at the same time. Do they just die?

These are older versions, not the new ones. Came with my mid 2011 iMac, now running Yosemite 10.10.5.

Thanks, but I had done almost of all these instructions already. I am getting a message after it tries to connect saying that connection failed without giving a reason. Unfortunately, the iMac is too large and heavy for me to be able to get it to the Apple store. And just bringing in the two devices would probably not do any good without the iMac.
