Q: Moving Aperture Library to Photos but via exporting

I Currently use aperture, I tried previously to migrate the library over to photos but ended in all kinds of issues a it failed converting after three days straight. Question is - is there any reason I can't simply export original size versions out of aperture and re import them into a fresh photos library.

Most of my 30,000 pictures are edited JPG's.

I know I would loose the original master copy and be left only with my modified copy but that's fine as I am only using the modified versions anyway.

IS there anything I gain by transferring the library over as oppose to export/import. What data would I loose if I do it my way?

thanks

Have you tried to repair your aperture library in aperture before migrating it to Photos?

Perhaps the aperture library has a corruption that prevents the migration.   Or the location of the library could be a problem.  Photos cannot migrate the library, if it is on an external drive, that is not formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).

This document describes, how an Aperture Library is migrated: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

If you simply export the photos, you will lose the relationship between edited photos and originals and the ability to revert to the originals.

Your projects, albums, and smart albums will not be preserved.

You would any of the organizational effort put into the photos, i.e. albums, slideshows, books and other projects.

As long as you export out of Aperture with the option to include keywords, etc. like you can with iPhoto

    Highlight001.jpg

you'll be able to keep some of the metadata, titles, keywords, locations.

If you the shame Subfolder Format option as iPhoto has you can import those Event Name folders into the new Photos library and have albums created for them with the same name as the Event.  You'll need to use this Applescript from the Photos for Mac User Tips section: Photos for Mac: Import Folders of Image Files into Library as Albums
