Q: email account not connecting after upgrading to el capitan

I've just upgraded to El Capitan on my 2010 MBP directly from OS X . All went well, however Mail now keeps rejecting my account passwords when I try to take the accounts online to get new mail. I get as far as a spinning wheel saying "connecting" but then it times out.

I've reset the passwords, toggled off and then on again the "automatically manage mail settings' tab in advanced settings and double checked the account settings. The program boots fine, it just can't get online

Anyone else had this issue? I'm using an iinet email account.

    From the Mail menu bar, please select

              Window â–¹ Connection Doctor

    Click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. Click Check Again and post the text that appears.

    Anonymize any private information before posting. That means names, email addresses, contents of messages, and anything else that you don't want to make public.

    I did come across that link and have tried most suggestions without success. My main problem is that the passwords for the email accounts aren’t being accepted. Mail can connect to the internet OK though.

    The outgoing mail (SMTP) server seems to expect you to authenticate with a plain-text password, or perhaps without a password. What authentication method is selected in the Advanced settings? That for the SMTP server, not the POP server.

    If I go to Mail;Preferences: Accounts:Advanced, it shows :

    Port 110

    Authenitication method: Password

    Use SSL box is UNCHECKED

    Allow insecure Authentication box is UNCHECKED

    No, that's the POP server. In the Connection Doctor window, please double-click the SMTP server. Another window will open, showing the settings.

    I just did the update to 10.11.2 and mail lost all of my folders. 9,000 emails are now in two folders called "recovered messages" instead of the 30 folders they used to be organized into. This is after hours of painfully restoring my old mail files from 10.6, one mailbox at a time. No back up yet... still in the rebuilding stage of a new computer I've only had for a few days. In over 15 years of using Macs, have never experienced a wipeout like that during an update.

    OK got it! Thanks for your patience with me

    So the authentication method for SMTP server is

    Password; Port 25, Use SSL is CHECKED, Automatically detect and maintain settings is CHECKED

     

    I spent ages with iinet tech suppoert today, and they Re-Synced both email accounts, which appears to have fixed the SMTP account, which now shows a green dot with message “connection and login to server suceded"

    I’ve been able to send email out of both accounts, but still can’t receive it on the Mac. I can receove it on my iPhone though, and iinet confirmas that all of the account details are correctly configured, so it’s definitely an issue with Mail on the Mac.

     

    Here is the text from the connectin doctor for the SMTP account now:

    If you're using SSL to connect to a POP server, the port number should be 995, not 110, according to IETF standards.

    I changed the port  to 995, but it changed itself back to port 25 for the SMTP server (maybe due to the 'automatically detect & maintain settings’ feature?)

    For both POP accounts, port 110, no SSL

    Still can connect to the SMTP server, but not the POP server

    I didn't suggest making any other changes to the access settings for the SMTP server. That seems to be working. We were discussing the POP server.

     

    You seem to have done everything you can to get Mail to work with that service. Some mail services are just incompatible. You might have better luck with a third-party mail client. I don't have a specific recommendation. Otherwise, use a different service provider—as long as it's not Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL. Nearly all will set up automatically and just work.
