Frequently Mail complains about being unable to connect to the Server via SMTP. Connection doctor reveals the same. Wait awhile, and it can connect. Is this just because the Apple server farm is inadequate to the task (common to nearly every Apple cloud-related service) or is an indication of some problem on my side (no problem with Safari, iTunes, etc)?
