I have a similar question. I am sending back my iPad Pro, and they have sent me a replacement. I followed their backup instructions to the iCloud, but nowhere in their printed instructions for sending back the defective iPad, does it say to delete all my data on the iPad. Shouldn't I be doing that? They told me to turn off the Track my iPad, but nothing about deleting and resetting to 'new'. Any advice? Thanks!

Thank you, it worked. My next question is . I am seeing on Apple Inc this information about when you delete everything from your device. It says this

Simple deletion will not permanently erase all of your data from your old I phone(in this case) and that it still can be recovered by some professional iPhone recovery app. To protect your personal information and keep your unwanted data deleted completely, you have to use professional IOS Data Eraser app to delete data on your old iPhone. Are you familiar with this? Is it true?

To the best of my knowledge (but I'm no expert in this area)...

When data is deleted it's not actually deleted in the way you might think, the system just forgets it's there and treats it as empty space, so yes to an extent this is true.

However don't forget all encryption and passwords still apply for your account and the whole process of recovery is complicated by overwriting new data to the device. Of course this is a matter for you to decide, but myself I really wouldn't worry about it. If you are still worried about it, you might also think about filling it with (say) videos (overwriting everything that was there before) and erasing it again.
