Q: MacBook Pro (15-Inch, Mid 2010) Memory Issue

My MacBook Pro (15-Inch, Mid 2010) has been having kernel panics and noisy purple screens that require hard restarts.

These issues almost exclusively occur when using Preview on large images (6000x4000), zooming in and out intensively. I do a good amount of video editing and recording and experience no issues when doing so.

Apple twice ran a test to see if this issue existed, but confirmed it did not. After a clean install of El Capitan, the computer ran fine for about two months.

When the issue came back, I ran an extended Apple Hardware Test and it returned this error within five minutes: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0xa4555c18

I isolated the issue to what I thought was a bad memory module, and it runs fine when I leave only one 4GB module in.

However, when the new memory module arrived, the noisy purple screen returned when I did intensive testing.

I tried the new module by itself, in either slot, and it failed both times.

I tried the old, working module by itself, in either slot, and it passed both times.

Now I'm stuck. Anyone have tips for the next step?

yes- sadly it may not be free.  Apple did have a recall program for your model and year of Macbook, but it has ended. All you can maybe do for now is take it in and get 'em to  do a VST* test and for right now, maybe, install gfxCardStatus. This will allow you to change to the other graphics card, either low or high power.  This probably may require service. I guess you've tried resetting the SMC and zapping the pram. I don't know if you can reset the NVRAM on a MacBook pro, but might be worth a try

    good luck

    Hi John,

They ran VST twice and it passed back in October. I will try gfxCardStatus and resetting the SMC and NVRAM. I think I only ran those on the 2007 iMac I just fixed with the AMD/ATI kext issue, been a busy few days!

Took the machine to Apple, again. It's undergoing extensive testing and they will call within 48 hours.

Looks like the Apple Genius instructed the tester to run "asd EFI. Loop if needed."
