My wife and I have iPhone 6s's. We also share the same Apple ID and iCloud ID. Should we have a different ID for both? If so, how do I do that so I don't lose contacts, etc.?

Apple IDs are iCloud IDs. You should get separate Apple IDs and then, if you want to you can turn on Family Sharing, so you can share purchases. That is what I recommend if you started out sharing an Apple ID.
