Q: iTunes could not backup the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected.

I routinely get messages that my phone has not been backed up (in over a year).

I have tried to backup in the following methods:

  1. USB direct to laptop - Backup to this computer
  2. Wi-Fi - Backup to this computer
  3. USB direct to laptop - Backup to iCloud
  4. Wi-Fi - Backup to iCloud
  5. Tried all with and without encryption.
  6. Delete previous backups (there are none)

I have upgraded my iCloud storage to 200GB to make sure I had space.

I have not been able to find a solution that makes it 100% of the way through.

I have read through multiple posts to no avail.

If anyone can give me another route I would appreciate it.

I created a video that shows the process and the alerts I have received.

I have the same issue.  Just started today, or I just noticed it today.  Can't backup to my Mac Pro as I've been doing for 2 years.  I was good 4 days ago.  I updated to IOS 10 3 days ago.  I've tried almost everything, including removing the existing backups, rebooting iPhone and Mac Pro, checking versions, etc.  I was able to back the iPhone up to my Macbook Pro, but get the "iPhone disconnected" error anytime I try to backup to my Mac Pro.  And my AppleCare expired today!!  Grrrr!!

Mac Pro running OS X 10.11.6

    iTunes version: 12.5.1.21

Do you still have this problem? I have it too.  I just realized I didn't have enough space on my computer to do a full backup.  I'm assuming if my phone is 64gb I have to have that amount available?  I'm wondering if that's it and that's the message it's spitting out.  Do you have enough room on your computer?  The backup option seems to only backup to the computer I think.  It doesn't give me the option to do a manual backup to the iCloud.  I don't know whether to give up or not on trying to delete files on my computer to get that much free space so I was checking to see if your issue was resolved.

    Thanks.

My problem was solved. I had tried everything or so I thought.  Problem was in my Mac Pro and fortunately that was still on Apple Care.  Apple care techs tried everything I had tried plus more (re-installing iTunes, re-installing Sierra).  After 5 hours on the phone with them, they took a dump of important files & forwarded to their engineers. 2 days later they called back and had me rename the backup directory,  effectively making it appear to be missing to iTunes.  Didn't have to reboot after rename. The next time I tried to backup, a new backup directory (folder if you will) was recreated and the backup proceeded and completed without error.  I had previously tried removing my old backup file, but not the entire directory that held the backup file. I had 3 other backup files in there (from old iPhone & 2 iPads).  Hope this helps someone else.
