Set root permissions independently on network share

Hi All,

I have a server which has a number of network shares. On each share is a series of folders with various things in. What I need to do is make the root of each share read only, so no new folders can be created. If I manually change the permission of the root folder to read only it then propagates this to any new folders/files made anywhere on the share. Is there anyway to have a special permission set for Root independent of the default permission for new files/folders??
Thanks for reading!

Hi - yes you should be able to set what you want. Process is essentially:

  • create the folder or go direct to File Sharing in Server.app and create the folder when you make a new share.
  • make the share and give it name, set access type to SMB | AFP etc.
  • under permissions (to try this out) add group 'Everyone' with permissions 'Custom' - just that one for the moment
  • next to share name click 'Browse...' button, this jumps you to Server > Storage with source folder selected
  • click on the gear icon at bottom and choose 'Edit Permissions...'
  • dialog comes up and you will see that the group 'Everyone' has the expander triangle next to it with permission 'Custom'
  • expand the triangle - you will see specific permissions, expand 'Inheritance' - there you will see all the options including apply to folder | child folders etc.

This should point you in the right direction. You can play around with it and test to fine tune but this is essentially the process to get at all the options.
