Q: can i have two or more apple id's associate with one account

We have multiple devices in our family, one (1) iPad2, one (1) iPadMini, one (1) iPhone 4s, one (1) iPhone 5s, two (2) iPhone 6 and one (1) iMac.  All are presently associated with the same apple id and account.  This creates issues with missed calls showing up on other peoples phones or devices, iMessages being received by others than who it was sent, games that can't be shared if logged into game center with apple id because it defaults to the original user that set up under the apple id.

Is there anyway to have multiple apple ids associated with the same account so that we can share purchases but in effect have private access to each device?  As a parent it's interesting to receive my kids messages but in reality, they are of an age where I am willing to provide privacy if they respect boundaries.  In essence I don't need to be in their business 24/7.  If I really want to see I can get access.

iPad 2, iOS 9.2

No. One account connects with one Apple ID.

Have you looked into Family Sharing:

Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing

Everyone would have their own Apple ID, but you would be able to share purchases. Did I misread your post, or is that what you are looking to do?

I know about family sharing but I also just recently read on the Apple site that you can connect multiple Apple IDs on a new device. I just switched  from android to the iPhone 6s Plus and I created a new Apple ID because my old Apple ID is being used with my husbands iPhone and my children's iPads as well as my iPad.  With all devices linked with my old Apple ID, it seemed like  more room was being used up on one device because of my children's iPads and the applications they were downloading. My main question is, can I have my new Apple ID on my iPhone  6S plus and also my old Apple ID or actually iTunes ID as well so that I can access all of my music I have purchased over the years with previous iPhones and iPads as well as some paid apps? My main concern is accessing my old iTunes account  for the music while also keeping my new Apple ID so all of my memory is not  being  taken  up.

To sum up, is what I read correct? Can I have my new Apple ID and my old Apple ID on my iPhone 6s Plus?

For  your original question, I would definitely go with family sharing because you can control how much you can see on your children's iPhones/iPads. You can control when they have Wi-Fi access or data access or  even shut down their device if it is past time of usage for your family or two late at night, etc. There are a lot of benefits with family sharing  that I am in fact going to be setting up shortly. With all the devices and the children it comes in very handy and I think would be a very easy solution to your problem

This would not be anything new, but rather that you would be using your old Apple ID for the iTunes & App Store only, and the new Apple ID for everything else:

    iCloud

    FaceTime

    Messages

    Mail

Here's a snippet from this article that may help: Sign in with your Apple ID on a new device - Apple Support

Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes

We recommend that you use the same Apple ID for all Apple services on your device—including the iTunes & App Stores and iCloud. Using multiple Apple IDs might be confusing and cause issues with accessing purchased content or using some services. If you have multiple Apple IDs, you can’t merge them.

But if you already have different Apple IDs that you want to use with iCloud and the iTunes & App Stores, you can still get all the benefits your Apple ID has to offer.

    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > iCloud and sign in with the Apple ID that you want to use with iCloud. Go back to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and sign in with the Apple ID that you want to use with iTunes.
    • On your Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud and sign in with the Apple ID that you want to use with iCloud. Go to iTunes > Sign In and sign in with the Apple ID that you want to use with iTunes.

Probably more helpful to you to have this guideline for your phone set up:

    1.     Go to Settings>iCloud & sign in with your new Apple ID for iCloud and all of the services you want with that account

    2.     Go to Settings>FaceTime and sign in with your new Apple/iCloud ID

    3.     Go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, and sign in with your new Apple/iCloud ID

    4.     Go to Settings>iTunes & App Store and sign in with your old iTunes ID
