Q: iPhoto to Photos, Need help

I have my iPhoto library on an external Raid 5 drive.  Its about 500 Gigs.  iPhoto is running very sluggish and I want to migrate it over to Photos.

I tried holding Option while opening and selecting the library on the external drive but I keep getting a "you don't have permission" error message.   So I found this and tried it: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204484  I keep getting the same error message when I run the command lines in terminal.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  If not does anyone know of a better Video/Photo library management software?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

What format is the drive and how is it connected?

The iPhoto or Photos library must be on a local volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) connected by a fast wired connection like USB, FireWire or ThunderBolt that is not a TimeMachine backup volume

As to better - that is in the eye of the beholder - we use Photos because it meets out needs - if it does not meet your needs then you need to find a program that does

    HI Larry,

Its connected via firewire.  The drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I have the entire iPhoto library running on the external drive now with iPhoto using it.

In the finder select the EHD and get info - at the bottom of the window is ignore ownership checked?

I don't see a place fro "Ignore ownership" in the finder when I click "get info" on the EHD.

I went into the sharing settings and made me the owner of the file.  I then tried opening the iPhoto with "Options" held down, selected the EHD iPhoto library and it seems to be working now.  Before it was stopping at 2% now its at 35%.  I'll let you know if it still doesn't work.  I think it was a simple setting issue on the sharing of the EHD.  Thanks for the help!
