I tried connecting MacBook Air SuperDrive to my Power Mac and it doesnt pick recognise it or power it up. I've plugged it into the USB slots on the main computer but to no avail.The inbuilt optical CD ROM no longer functions.

If you have 10.6.8 on your "PowerMac" it is a Mac Pro. PowerMacs use Power PC processors vice Intel processors and then can't go beyond 10.5.8.

Assuming you have a Mac Pro see:

However, the USB 2 port may not provide enough power
