EL Capitan mail.app continuously downloading imap emails (godaddy account)

Device info:

el capitan mail.app (latest ver to date).

Summary of issue:

- godadd imap mail account continuously downloading emails.

- inbox doesn't show the most recent mail.

Attempts at resolution:

At an attempt to resolved this issue, I have used the mail.app rebuild feature, and also completely removed and re-added the mail account in question. with those attempts the mail.app still continuously downloads godaddy emails. Also my inbox doesn't show the most recent mail due to the continuous downloading issue. to mitigate this I can disconnect the re-connection to the godaddy server. this process will bring in new emails for a short period of time, but they disappear again after a few minutes.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, as I said, I have fixed this problem by writing down all the pertinent settings for all Mail and iCloud, and messages, and calendar, and Contacts accounts, then deleting ALL Accounts in System preferences > Internet Accounts.

it may be prudent to do a Restart at that point.

Then re-entering the information for one Account, then each of the others in turn. You may need to re-Index Mail in each Account after this, but it does not take long.

My conclusion about why this works was that the Internet Accounts database needed to get rebuilt from scratch -- something old was messing it up. I have had no such wacky problems since I did this.

gcobley, thanks for posting! This CONTINUES to PLAUGE my work day (I've previously posted here: Re: EL Capitan mail.app continuously downloading imap emails (godaddy account) ). As previously noted, I am having this issue only with GoDaddy, but strangely ONLY on one of my computers (my main work computer, of course). I will try Grant's suggestion (above) and see if this might fix the problem this time.

In the meantime, have just purchased Airmail 2 and am in the (painful) process of recreating my mailboxes using this new client. Would prefer to have all boxes on the same, and have to only remember how to use one, email client. But Apple Mail has never been a love of mine . . .

Will post again later with results. Sirip1 -- if you're on this discussion, any luck on your end?

Grant, I spent nearly two hours doing exactly as you spell out. DELETED all accounts via sys prefs internet account. Restarted. Installed all accounts once again, and did so one at a time. Alas, no success. Seemingly same issue. Will see what tomorrow brings.

In the meantime, I've successfully installed Airmail 2 and it seems to be working like a charm. If it continues to perform, I'll be ditching Apple Mail. Happily.

I too have a ticket with Apple. They told me yesterday to start up in safe mode and open mail that would clear some caches and I did that but no help.

GoDaddy says it's a Mac issue and I think it because I can see the email when I log into the Godaddy web portal.

I hate to quit using Mail but I am going to have to. This is a very big pain. iMac is downloading message all day long. If anybody comes up with a real solution please post it.

Interesting is that no other users in our office are having this problem.

IMAP I spent a long time in a chat with a support guy from Apple yesterday. It was a real pain. It seems that people that have iCloud accounts and IMAP accounts set up in mail might have had problems after the last upgrade. I had to disable the iCloud account and rebuild the IMAP while the iCloud was disabled.

On a personal note--iCloud has some nice features but it sure seems to create problems and the benefit to me should be more but the confusion is not worth it. I am either going to ignore upgrades or leave iCloud or leave mail. I use mac in my business and moved to macs years ago--at least 10--because keeping up the Windows machines and dealing upgrade issues were taking up too much of my time and now it seems Mac is just as bad.

I think my problem is solved but I am not sure. It didn't appear that mail was downloading messages all day today.

Has anyone found any new approaches? I have the same problem with Apple Mail and a GoDaddy IMAP account on my MacBook Air. I cannot see many of the mails or find them using search. Interestingly, when I enter the someone's name into search it suggests the person as a sender but does not actually display any of the mails from that person.

I have 11 accounts in my mail client, 7 of which are GoDaddy (all IMAP) but it seems only one is acting up and continuously keeps loading mails. No such issues on iOS devices with the same accounts. I have tried to rebuild the mailbox in question several times, no luck.

I had this same disaster, headache and frustration, and the best SOLUTION is to install a new email mail client until Go Daddy and Apple Mail can work out their issue. I installed Airmail and it's great. All the emails from Go Daddy transfers into it, and you are good to go. I will probably keep it now as I like it much better than Apple Mail, and it is free too.

I was determined to use Apple Mail too, but got tired of thinking it was fixed and then the problems would reappear!! It was starting to affect my productivity, and I couldn't have my email be such a disaster and so unpredictable. Once I set the new stuff up I started loving Airmail more. Now if Apple Mail gets fixed, I will not go back. I sure hope you can get it fixed if you like Apple Mail that much :-)

OK. I was having the exact same issue using Mac Mail (v 9.2 - 3112) in El Capitan (10.11.13; Intel i7 - 11" MacBook Air Mid-2012). The issue was affecting my GoDaddy IMAP account on both the aforementioned MacBook Air and my iMac. None of my iOS devices were affected (iPhone, iPad, etc...). I followed the instructions on this forum to rebuild and reindex the Mac Mail App, but to no avail.

I kept thinking this was a GoDaddy issue plaguing this particular IMAP account because I have three other GoDaddy IMAP accounts that reside on both computers that were not affected. After a GoDaddy tech support phone call I was told that GoDaddy servers cannot stably support folders with more than 10,000 messages in them. Once folders get too large, the server may behave erratically. This explains why only one of my IMAP accounts was affected; it was the largest (and sadly, most disorganized) one. It also explains why none of my iOS devices were affected - I believe they archive messages differently the computers. GoDaddy told to do the following:

  1. Delete my unstable account on Mac Mail.
  2. Log into GoDaddy's webmail and break up any folders with over 10,000 messages while being careful not to create any additional folders with over 10,000 messages.
  3. Re-add my IMAP account back to into Mac Mail

While I was on the tech support call, GoDaddy did do a refresh of the server settings. I do not think this or the deletion of the account in Mac Mail fixed the issue. I believe the key to solving the problem, at least for me, was breaking up the folders in GoDaddy Webmail. Hope this helps!
