Is there a way, native to my iMac and its' apps, that I can encrypt files?

I know I can password protect a document from Pages, Numbers, etc., but can I actually encrypt a file like a Numbers doc without requiring me to use a third party application. There are some documents that would be handy to have in the iCloud, but I am a bit wary of the level of security afforded me there.
