Q: Macbook Air initial battery charge

Hi to all!

I just bought a Macbook Air today, and I haven't turned it on yet. For maximizing the battery's lifespan, how many hours of initial charging is recommended?

Thanks in advance!

Charge it until the light on the connector  turns green.

It is fine to start using the computer right out of the box. Plug it in and let it charge up. The rules for using your computer/battery are very simple today: 1) when you can charge it, do so. The battery has no ‘memory’ like the old style batteries so it is fine to use it for 40 minutes on battery and then plug it in. 2) Don’t worry about keeping it plugged in too long. When the battery is fully charged the computer will automatically shift to trickle charge mode to keep it topped off without overcharging the battery. 3) don’t worry that keeping it plugged in too long will harm the battery. It won’t.

Now for the two very very important rules you really do want to follow: 1) when you are using it on battery and the computer warns you that you are on reserve power get ready to shut down. You do not want to keep using the computer until the battery fully discharges. That is one of two things you can do to shorten the life of the battery. 2) Apple recommends that at least once or twice a month you use it on battery. Most of the year that’s not a problem for me but during the summer months when classes aren’t in session sometimes I don’t use it on battery much so I’ve set up an event on the calendar to remind me once a month to use the computer off the charger.
