I understand that your recently moved content to an external drive but you are not showing that much of a change on your Mac. Let's see if we can fix that for you.
I would start with taking a look at the article below. it will walk you through verify and repairing the startup volume on your Mac. I know it talks about startup issues but because this deals with your hard drive that runs you mac, these exact steps will at least verify and repair if it finds anything.

Jan 2, 2016 10:54 AM in response to CADARSOby babowa,Did you delete the items you had copied to an external and then emptied the trash? (iPhoto has its own trash; so does iMovie - that needs to be emptied as well). You need to check all of that because, when you copy things to an external, the originals remain where they are at.
