Q: how do I get my purchased music from my mac to my iphone so I can use them as ringtones?

DO you not know how to sync content to your iPhone? You should probably read the manual. Click Support at the top of this page, then iPhone for the manual.
To sync, open iTunes, connect iPhone, select what you want, sync

Oct. 2010 Getting ringtones folder to show in iTunes - - iTunes > Preferences. Under the General tab below Show, confirm Ringtones is selected
I can't add m4r files to itunes. - - largely a matter of people not realizing when you add a file to iTunes it puts a copy of the file in the iTunes folder and uses that, not the original file.
