Connecting Apple TV to Vizio sound bar and directv box

Received a Vizio soundbar for Christmas and am having difficulty connecting it to my Apple TV 4th generation and my directv box. Optical cord hooked up directly to cable box and television and all is right with the world for television viewing. My problem is connecting the Apple TV box. HDMI connected from Apple TV to back of television and when attempting to use Netflix or other apps, I get only video with no audio. Everything I've seen in the support communities deals with connecting a digital optical cord to the app which is not an option since the only connections are HDMI or Ethernet.

Does your TV support ARC? If so, this is how I have my vizio tv and vizio sound bar set up, everything connected to tv with hdmi and the TV hdmi ARC port connected to the hdmi ARC port on the sound bar. You should also be able to do this with optical as well, optical from TV to sound bar and everything connected to TV with hdmi.

No ARC. (at least not that is indicated). It's a 6-7 year old hdtv.

I have similar problem connecting 4th gen APple TV to my Yamaha receiver with Optical cable as there is no optical port on nnew Apple TV. My old Apple TV has both HDMI and optical audio out which helped connecting to my Yamaha receiver and better sound. Please let me know how I can connect to my Yamaha receiver?
