Jan 1, 2016 11:46 PM in response to sgarch2820by Kenichi Watanabe,You're connecting an iPad? In iTunes 12.x, it appears as a small device button on the horizontal bar that goes across the iTunes window. Is that where you are looking?
As a test, try powering off (shutting down) your Mac, and disconnecting all USB devices (except for USB keyboard/mouse if used). Start up Mac, run iTunes, and connect iPad to a direct USB port on Mac.

Jan 2, 2016 5:40 AM in response to Cunnlaby sgarch2820,Perhaps I have posted this query in the wrong place. . .I found it difficult to determine how to post a question. My problem was that I have an iMac with the current version of OS X recently downloaded and now many things, including iTunes don't appear to work correctly. One of the problems was that when I tried to connect my iPod to iTunes in order to put new music on it, there was no icon visible in iTunes 12 indicating a connected device.
As it happens, I had two other devices, an iPhone 4S and a smaller iPod to try. Both were recognized so it became clear that there was a glitch specifically with my 120 GB iPod. With no way to "reboot" it I let it run out of power. When I re-attached it to the computer it began to recharge and a message appeared onscreen that something was corrupted and that the original factory settings would have to be restored.
I allowed it to erase all my music files and then manually reloaded once it had been restored. I think it is working again but time will tell.
Thanks to both respondents for trying to help.

Jan 2, 2016 8:45 PM in response to sgarch2820by Kenichi Watanabe,★HelpfulI don't think your post was in the "wrong" place (since it's related to iTunes for Mac), although there is also a forum category for iPod classic.
With no way to "reboot" it I let it run out of power.
There is a way to Reset (restart) an iPod, described in this document. If your iPod ever "locks up," you can do this (immediately)
Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support (See iPod with a click wheel section)
I allowed it to erase all my music files and then manually reloaded once it had been restored.
You can set it up to use automatic syncing, unless you are using the Manually manage... setting as your preference. If your entire iTunes music library can fit on your 120GB iPod, iTunes automatically keeps the iPod updated with changes to your iTunes library.
Glad you got your iPod working again...

Jan 2, 2016 8:47 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby sgarch2820,Thanks Kenichi. I appreciate the additional information as well as the lack of condescension or ridicule. I am always a little leery of posting issues on these forums due to past experience at being ridiculed for not understanding or knowing some technological detail. The generous help of everyone who tries is greatly appreciated by me, and no doubt, others.

Jan 2, 2016 9:03 PM in response to sgarch2820by Kenichi Watanabe,Unlike other "wild and crazy" forums out there, this is the Apple user discussion forum that Apple officially moderates. In my experience, people here are typically helpful and not rude (but no promises ). You should not hesitate to come back if you have Apple-related questions.
